Albena Shkodrova

Albena Shkodrova has a MA in Slavonic philology (Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian), and has specialized in International relations at the Law Faculty of Sofia University “St Kliment Ohridski” and the London School of Economics (New Europe in World Economy). She has briefly worked as a diplomat, and for many years – as a journalist. Since 2008 she is the head editor of Bulgaria’s Bacchus magazine ( – a journal on food and wine culture, and in 2014 she published Communist Gourmet. The curious story of food in People's Republic of Bulgaria.

From January 2015 onwards, she started working on her PhD, titled The Rebellious Cookbook: Writing Recipes as an Act of Resistance in Communist Bulgaria, with prof. Peter Scholliers as supervisor. Starting from the notion of cuisine as a concise expression of social circumstances in all their complexity, the research will examine the motivation behind private attempts to correct, amend or replace official culinary literature.
