Eeckman Edgard

Edgard Eeckman is the communication manager and spokesperson of the UZ Brussel, the university hospital of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels). He acquired a bachelor in communication management in 1979 and a pedagogical certificate in 1980. He gained substantial experience in internal and external communication, crisis communication, media training and media relations. He worked as a journalist, head of the communication service of the Belgian Red Cross and senior communication consultant before joining the hospital. In 2007, being 50 years of age, he decided to acquire a master in communication studies at the VUB, a study that gave him the hang of scientific research. In 2009 he started his PhD “Power to the patients? The influence of the internet as a source of health information on the power balance between patient and general practitioner”. He teaches health education at the Erasmushogeschool Brussel. He is the co-editor and one of the authors of a book on communication in and by health organisations, published by Lannoo Campus (2015).
