Miners in Limburg

Material culture, everyday life and consumption of miners, 1900-1960 (preliminary title).

Joeri Januarius

This research project examines material culture, everyday life and consumption of miners in Belgium between 1900 and 1960. Interestingly, the process of the accelerated development of the standard of living and consumption has hardly been investigated. This research project wonders how Belgian laborers have experienced these changes: what did this 'consumption revolution' mean to these families? The relationship between working men's families, objects, social relations and changing networks are examined. Three themes of research will be used to disclose this daily life: living arrangements, personal intimacy (hair and clothing) and eating and feasting habits. This research will make use of photographs as its main source.
